The 51�Թ� Population Division organized a technical mission in Niger to improve the capacity of the staff of the Institut National de la Statistique, Minister of Health, Minister of Education, and Minister of Agriculture in the production and use of population estimates and projections for evidence-based policy making for sustainable development.

Enhancing international cooperation in the field of migration

Overview

Migration has moved to the top of the policy agenda in many countries around the world, and as a result there are renewed calls for States to invest in improving data on migration. There is an urgent need to improve the availability, international comparability, timeliness and quality of migration data. Statistical projects and initiatives on migration and migrants are currently underway in many countries in national statistical institutes, relevant ministries and institutions, research centres, as well as in several international organisations. However, these initiatives often remain fragmented, confined to each discipline and are not usually brought together and disseminated in a comprehensive and integrated manner.

In this context, the OECD, IOM and UNDESA jointly organised the first International Forum on Migration Statistics. This is aimed at becoming a regular event that will contribute to intensify the exchange of information, to promote mutual learning and to facilitate cooperation among relevant stakeholders. It brought together all producers, analysts and users of migration statistics in a community of interest centred on migration measurement issues. It mobilised expertise from a wide range of disciplines - such as political science, economics, demography, development, geospatial science, sociology, statistics, and information technology - that can contribute to improve global understanding of the migration phenomenon.

Overview

International migration is a global phenomenon that is growing in scope, complexity and impact. Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional migration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fueled by changing economic, demographic, political and social realities. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of migrant populations as well as host and origin economies and societies. The rise in global mobility, the growing complexity of migratory patterns and the impact of population movements have contributed to international migration becoming a priority for the international community.

The purpose of the meeting will be to contribute to the preparation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration by (a) taking stock of existing data and research on relevant topics, (b) highlighting gaps in the current evidence base and (c) assessing priorities for the further development of data, research and training to support the implementation of the Global Compact. In addition, the meeting will allow participants to share information about progress in monitoring the implementation of the migration-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The meeting will also allow participants to present and coordinate their recent activities and initiatives on migration.

Overview

The adoption of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), held in Cairo, Egypt in 1994, represented a fundamental shift in population and development, moving population policies and programmes from demographic targets towards a people-centred approach, grounded in the respect for human rights and a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. Subsequently, the Millennium Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development integrated many goals and objectives of the ICPD Programme of Action.

While important progress has been made, considerable gaps still exist in the implementation of different areas of the Programme of Action. In 2010, the General Assembly decided to extend the Programme of Action beyond 2014 with a view to fully meeting its goals and objectives (A/RES/65/234). In 2014, the Secretary-General reported that progress in implementing the goals and objectives of the Programme of Action had been unequal and fragmented and that new challenges, realities and opportunities had emerged since its adoption (E/CN.9/2014/4). The General Assembly held a special session in September 2014 to assess the status of implementation of the Programme of Action and to renew political support for actions required for the full achievement of its goals and objectives.

The Commission on Population and Development (CPD), at its fifty-second session in 2019, will carry out a review and appraisal of the ICPD Programme of Action and its contribution to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda. The timing of this appraisal, 25 years after “Cairo”, is consistent with the five-year cycle of review of the status of implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action carried out by the CPD in 2004, 2009 and 2014, respectively.In preparation for the fifty-second session of the CPD, the Population Division of the 51�Թ� Department of Economic and Social Affairs will convene an expert group meeting. The meeting will examine progress and gaps in implementing the goals and objectives set out in the ICPD Programme of Action and explore the potential implications of future de

Demographic trends for the full implementation of the Programme, and discuss the contribution of the ICPD Programme of Action to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda. The meeting will also examine progress in measuring sustainable development indicators related to population.
