Migration can bring substantial benefits, but can also have negative consequences. Both developing and developed economies need migrants to meet the demand for workers with different levels of skills.</p> <p class="rtejustify">There is mounting evidence that, leveraged by the right policies, migrant and diaspora communities can significantly contribute to development in both origin and destination countries, through remittances, trade, investment, creation of enterprises, and transfer of technology, skills and knowledge. At the same time, there is concern that the emigration of skilled professionals may hinder the attainment of development goals, such as the Millennium Development Goals, especially in small developing countries.</p> <p class="rtejustify">Many migrants are able to move, live and work in safety and dignity. Yet others are compelled to move as a result of poverty, a lack of decent work, human rights violations, armed conflict, persecution and environmental degradation. In the absence of regular migration opportunities, migrants resort to irregular migration channels. In their new homes, many migrants face exploitation, discrimination and xenophobia, while their contributions to the host society go largely unrecognized.</p> <p class="rtejustify">In brief, migration in the context of globalization brings opportunities and challenges, which need to be addressed in a comprehensive fashion. This is why the UN convened the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development from 3-4 October 2013 with an eight-point agenda for action on making migration work.</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/2013">2013</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/international-migration">International migration</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/general-assembly">General Assembly</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-featured-categories field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Categories:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/general-assembly">General Assembly</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/migration">Migration</a></div></div></div> Mon, 02 Nov 2020 23:31:00 +0000 BOUEDRAO 3662 at /development/desa/pd Panel discussion on migration and sustainable development /development/desa/pd/events/panel-discussion-migration-and-sustainable-development <div class="field field-name-field-date field-type-date field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><span class="date-display-single">Wednesday, 24 April 2013 - 10:00am</span></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><h3>Overview</h3> <p class="rtejustify">The Panel Discussion on Migration and Sustainable Development-Opportunities and Challenges will be co-organized by the Division for Sustainable Development and the Population Division, DESA in the margin of the forty-sixth session of the Commission on Population and Development, to be held in New York on 22-26 April 2013.</p> <p class="rtejustify">A growing interest in the migration-development nexus has led to an increase in research on the subject. Expanded efforts to collect and analyze data have resulted in significant progress in the understanding of migration aspirations (economic, risk diversification and environmental factors etc.). The consequences of movement on receiving and sending countries (remittances, social effects, and transnational networks) and the role of development in fueling migration are also better grasped. The meeting took place at the 51łÔąĎ in New York from 21 to 22 October 2013.</p> <p> The Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), adopted in Cairo in 1994, was a landmark document that affirmed the inextricable linkages between population, development and human rights. A Special Session of the 51łÔąĎ General Assembly would be held in September 2014 to assess the status of implementation of the Programme of Action and to renew consensus and global commitment towards its goals and objectives. This expert group meeting brought together experts to reflect on progress and challenges toward achieving the survival goals that were set out in the ICPD Programme of Action. Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional immigration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fuelled by changing economic, demographic, political and social conditions. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of immigrant populations as well as economies and societies in countries of origin and destination. The rise in global mobility, the growing complexity of migratory patterns and the impact of such movements on development have all contributed to international migration becoming a priority for the international community.</p> <p>The 2013 Coordination Meeting on International Migration focus on recent migration trends and their relevance for development in countries of origin, destination and transit.
