Building a future free of hunger
Nearly 870 million people around the globe suffer from chronic malnutrition. To address the challenges of food security and to secure a future free of hunger, the UN Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly*s Second Committee, in collaboration with FAO, IFAD and WFP, will be organizing a special joint meeting on “Food security and nutrition: Scaling up the global response”. Four years after the eruption of the global financial crisis, the world economy is still in a precarious situation. Growth has weakened considerably during 2012 and the prospects for the next two years continue to be challenging, fraught with a number of uncertainties and risks slanted towards the downside. The report proposes a different policy approach, moving away from the current emphasis on fiscal austerity to focus on short and long-term measures to stimulate jobs growth. Read more

Mr. Hazem Fahmy assumed the position as Chief of the Multistakeholder Engagement & Outreach Branch at DESA’s Financing for Development Office (FfDO) in October. Mr. Fahmy started his career in 1987 at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has served at the Egyptian Mission to the EU, in the Egyptian Foreign Minister*s Cabinet and at the Egyptian Permanent Mission to the UN.
