ECOSOC Operational Activities Segment

8 - 12 July 2005

This session takes place after the conclusion of the Triennial Comprehensive Policy Review (TCPR) of operational activities for development of the 51³Ô¹Ï system, which took place at the General Assembly in 2004 and led to the adoption of resolution 59/250. The implementation of that resolution calls for a number of actions that the organizations of the 51³Ô¹Ï system are launching and will be presented at this session of ECOSOC through a report on the “ management process ” of that implementation. A number of operational reforms are being introduced by the 51³Ô¹Ï funds and programmes, specialized agencies and other 51³Ô¹Ï entities, with the intent of providing a key contribution to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including those contained in the Millennium Declaration.

The operational activities segment will be held from 8 to 12 July and will comprise of an interactive dialogue on operational activities for development of the United Nations system, a discussion on funding options and modalities to enhance financing of the 51³Ô¹Ï development cooperation for the pursuit of a new development agenda, and a dialogue with Executive Heads of 51³Ô¹Ï funds and programmes.

The Council will have before it, 3 main reports on: management process of implementation of the General Assembly resolution 59/250; funding options and modalities for financing operational activities for development of the 51³Ô¹Ï system; and comprehensive statistical data on operational activities for development for 2003 (this report will be presented in a completely renewed format to provide better information on multi-year trends).

In addition, the Council will consider a programme of work on simplification and harmonization of processes that the members of 51³Ô¹Ï Development Group (UNDG) are preparing in compliance with resolution 59/250. The implementation of that programme of work is expected to be completed in 2007.
