Consideration at the sixty-sixth session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 30th meeting, on 11 November 2011 (see ).

Statements were made by the representatives of Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. The Chair of the Committee also spoke.

Some delegations expressed their support for the granting of observer status to the West African Economic and Monetary Union in the General Assembly.

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At the 30th meeting, on 11 November 2011, the representative of Togo, on behalf of Benin, Burkina Faso, C?te d*Ivoire, Egypt, Eritrea, Finland, France, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, the Sudan and Togo, introduced a draft resolution entitled ※Observer status for the West African Economic and Monetary Union in the General Assembly§ ().

At the 30th meeting, on 11 November, the Committee adopted draft resolution A/C.6/66/L.28 without a vote. The representatives of Argentina and Lichtenstein made statements in explanation of position after the adoption of the draft resolution.

Under this draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite the West African Economic and Monetary Union to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer; and would request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
