The Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2022-2031 (DPoA) was adopted today, 17 March 2022, in the first part of the Fifth 51�Թ� Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5).

Launch of Good Practices in South-South & Triangular Cooperation in Least Developed Countries, 16 March 2022

The 51�Թ� Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), the 51�Թ� Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) and the 51�Թ� Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), in partnership with the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) will jointly launch the “Good Practices in South-South and Triangular Cooperation in the least Developed Countries: From the Istanbul Programme of Action to Achieving Sustainable and Resilient Development” publication. This special volume has a particular focus on LDCs, mapping and sharing around 80 good practices relevant to the implementation of the SDGs as well as the IPoA priorities in these countries while spotlighting the role of South-South cooperation in supporting sustainable development. This publication aims to demonstrate the potential of South-South cooperation in LDCs to attain the objectives of supporting national and regional development efforts, strengthening institutional and technical capacities and improving the exchange of experience and know-how. The publication aims to facilitate and promote peer and cross-regional learning and collective efforts among LDCs and their development partners in addressing LDCs’ special development challenges and building resilience.

Draft Doha Programme of Action for LDCs has been approved

22 December 2021. The draft of the new comprehensive programme of action for LDCs, the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries (DPoA) has been approved. The Programme will be formally adopted by world leaders at LDC5.

From the LDC5 website: "Through six focus areas that include: eradicating poverty, fostering science, technology and innovation as well as addressing climate change and recovering from COVID-19, the DPoA sets out ambitious commitments by the international community and LDCs to support this group of vulnerable nations to overcome their unique development challenges."

Zero draft of the Doha Programme of Action for the period 2022-2031 released

On July 12 the co-chairs of the Fifth 51�Թ� Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5), Bangladesh and Canada, released the zero draft of the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs for 2022-2031. The second session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom 2) for LDC5 will take place from 26 to 30 July. The zero draft and information about PrepCom 2 are available here.

LDC5 Prepcom side-event “Towards Improved Support to Graduating and Graduated Countries”

Amidst a challenging global environment, this side event aimed to discuss how the international community can give concrete support to least developed countries that are graduating as well as to graduated countries. The new Programme of Action for the LDCs is critically important to build on successes achieved on reaching graduation thresholds, to provide further impetus to LDCs in meeting the 2030 Development Agenda and SDGs, to identify and respond to new and emerging challenges, and to leverage opportunities, rather than fall farther behind. In recent years, the Inter Agency Task Force has been providing better coordinated UN System support to graduating LDCs. The Committee for Development Policy (CDP) has piloted a new initiative, the Sustainable Graduation Support Facility, and proposed enhancements to its monitoring system. As the new decade is expected to see an increased number of LDCs reaching the graduation thresholds amidst challenging external conditions, LDC5 should lead to concrete, integrated and innovative global support that help these countries to achieve risk-informed sustainable graduation with momentum.
