31 May 2023. WTO members discussed initiatives aimed at strengthening the economic output of the world’s poorest countries at a meeting of the Sub-Committee on Least-Developed Countries (LDCs) on 31 May. Angola, Rwanda and international organizations shared their experiences in improving LDCs’ economic capacity. More information here.

The workshop will bring together officials from the beneficiary countries, selected nonbeneficiary African countries, representatives of the private sector, partner implementing agencies, and international experts to: ▪ Discuss challenges and opportunities associated with developing coherent strategies for productive capacities development. ▪ Identify recommendations on possible measures and options to address existing constraints on productive capacities development ▪ Share best practices and experiences in formulating and implementing holistic and coherent approaches to productive capacities development amongst government officials and stakeholders. ▪ Draw lessons for the three project beneficiary countries from the experiences of nonLDCs in Africa as well as non-African countries that have successfully developed productive capacities. Given the importance of cross-cutting issues (such as gender and inequality) in the development of productive capacities, the workshop includes a session on Gender, Inequality and the Challenge of Productive Transformation in African LDCs to enhance participants understanding of how addressing these challenges could contribute to the development of productive capacities in the beneficiary countries.

Peer Learning Group Meeting - Production Transformation Policy Review (PTPR) of Bangladesh

The Peer Learning Group (PLG) Meeting was organised in the framework of the Production Transformation Policy Review (PTPR) of Bangladesh. The PTPR of Bangladesh is carried out at the request of the Government of Bangladesh. It is implemented by the OECD Development Centre with the financial contribution of the European Commission. It benefits from collaboration with the 51�Թ� Department of Social and Economic Affairs (DESA), the UN Committee for Development Policy (CDP) and its Secretariat, and the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

LDC5 Prepcom side-event: Productive Capacities for the New Decade

Why is productive capacity central to the sustainable development of least developed countries (LDCs)? How can LDCs, with support from development partners, expand their productive capacity through domestic policies including efforts to build back better from COVID-19? How can the Fifth 51�Թ� Conference on the LDCs (LDC5) contribute to these efforts through the new Programme of Action? These issues were discussed at a side event of the LDC5 Preparatory Committee on “Productive Capacities for the New Decade” held on 26 May 2021. The event was organized by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), UN Committee for Development Policy (CDP) Secretariat and UN Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries.
