What are game changing actions to implement the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs? What are potential solutions to support crisis response, recovery and SDG progress? This session of the 2023 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) will focus on examples of policies, measures and actions underway to improve the lives of the most vulnerable, in the countries furthest behind. It will include actions that must be taken urgently to ensure that progress can be made, and solutions for bridging gaps in energy, digital technologies, and gender equality. The discussion will invite examples of inclusive governance and strengthened institutions that apply peer learning activities and whole-of-society approaches that have benefitted from the follow-up and review exercise undertaken through Voluntary National Reviews, reflecting on progress in domestication of the SDGs and their alignment with national development plans, integrated national financing frameworks and strengthened statistical capacities for measuring progress. ECOSOC

ECOSOC has recommended deferral of Angola's graduation and extension of the preparatory period for Solomon Islands

7 June 2023. The 51�Թ� Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has recommended that the General Assembly defer the graduation of Angola, currently scheduled for February 2023. Consultations are ongoing under the CDP's Enhanced Monitoring Mechanism. The CDP is to report back to ECOSOC on the outcome of the consultations. If the General Assembly defers Angola's graduation, the issue would be addressed by ECOSOC in 2024. Angola does not currently meet the graduation criteria.

ECOSOC also recommended, based on the CDP's monitoring outcome, that the General Assembly extend the preparatory period for Solomon Islands, which is currently scheduled to graduate in December 2024. The General Assembly is expected to address the issue during the current session.

Building on Generation Connect’s recent participation in the LDC5 Youth Forum and Youth Track in Qatar, this session aims to highlight role of young people at the forefront of SDG implementation and digital transformation in LDCs. Our objective is to foster intergenerational discussion on the following questions: How can we ensure meaningful connectivity for youth so that they can have real opportunities to lead and share our shared digital future? What does an enabling digital environment for youth in LDCs to thrive and prosper look like?

Presentation of CDP Report at ECOSOC High-level Segment

On 16 July 2021, Jose Antonio Ocampo , Chair of the Committee for Development Policy (CDP) introduced the Committee's report to the High-Level Segment of ECOSOC. He stressed the importance of universal vaccination, increased financial support and debt relief to developing countries, structural transformation and a new, supportive, multilateralism to secure a sustainable, equitable and resilient recovery from COVID-19. Professor Ocampo reported on the Committee's work on least developed countries (LDCs) including its recommendation that Bangladesh, Lao PDR and Nepal graduate from the category and that productive capacities be at the center of the programme of action to be adopted at LDC5. Greater support for graduating countries is critical to ensure they transition smoothly out of the category. Professor Ocampo also urged greater attention to issues of environmental sustainability, structural transformation and the root causes of inequalities in the voluntary national reviews (VNRs).
