Africa Regional Review Presents Clear Path Forward for Supporting Landlocked Developing Countries
Considerable progress has been made by African Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) in advancing their sustainable development goals, though much remains to be done in the areas of infrastructure, economic transformation and governance.
This is according to the outcome resolution of the Africa Regional review meeting in Botswana this week, the first preparatory meeting of the Third 51³Ô¹Ï Conference on the Landlocked Developing Countries. The resolution will form a key part of deliberations towards the next Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries, which will be adopted at that meeting, happening in Kigali next year.
The resolution acknowledges significant achievements made by African LLDCs across various sectors, including poverty eradication, education, healthcare, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. It also recognizes the dedicated efforts of governments, civil society organizations, and regional bodies in improving the well-being of their citizens and building resilient and inclusive economies.
However, the resolution calls for significant accelerated action to help African LLDCs meet their development goals and ambitions. While remarkable progress has been made, the resolution highlights the urgent need to intensify efforts to address persistent challenges and ensure sustainable development reaches all corners of the continent. LLDC Governments are encouraged to prioritize the implementation of effective policies and programs that promote economic growth, social inclusivity, and environmental stewardship.
Additionally, the resolution emphasizes the importance of international support and partnerships. It calls on the global community to provide increased financial resources, technology transfer, and capacity-building assistance to African LLDCs. Recognizing that sustainable development in Africa is crucial for global progress, the document urges international stakeholders to honor their commitments and fulfill their obligations towards the continent.
The draft outcome suggests several key actions to further advance sustainable development in Africa:
- The need to foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth that generates decent jobs, promotes entrepreneurship, and reduces income inequalities. This can be achieved through targeted investments in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure development.
- The imperative of enhancing social protection systems and expanding access to quality education, healthcare, and social services. Governments are encouraged to prioritize investments in human capital development, with a particular focus on vulnerable and marginalized groups.
- The importance of promoting gender equality and women's empowerment. It proposes the adoption of policies and legislation that end gender-based discrimination, promote women's leadership, and ensure equal access to economic opportunities and resources.
- Greater focus on environmental sustainability. It urges African countries to strengthen their efforts to mitigate climate change, protect biodiversity, and transition to renewable energy sources. The document emphasizes the potential of green technologies and innovative approaches in achieving sustainable development goals.
The outcome resolution of the Africa Regional Review presents a clear statement of intent for accelerated action and international support to drive sustainable development in Africa.
Through it, delegates at the African Regional Review underscore the need for collaborative efforts between African governments, international partners, and stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of these proposals and achieve sustainable development for the benefit of all Africans.
