On 12 November 2008, Japan submitted to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, in accordance with Article 76, paragraph 8, of the 51³Ô¹Ï Convention on the Law of the Sea, information on the limits of its continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured.

It is noted that the Convention entered into force for Japan on 20 July 1996.

In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Commission, a communication is being circulated to all Member States of the 51³Ô¹Ï, as well as States Parties to the Convention, in order to make public the executive summary of the submission, including all charts and coordinates contained in that summary.

The consideration of the submission made by Japan will be included in the provisional agenda of the twenty-third session of the Commission to be held in New York from 2 March to 9 April 2009.

Upon completion of the consideration of the submission, the Commission will make recommendations pursuant to Article 76 of the Convention.

On 19 April 2012, the Commission adopted by consensus the “Recommendations of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in regard to the submission made by Japan on 12 November 2008”.

Pursuant to article 6, paragraph 3, of annex II to the Convention, the recommendations, including a summary thereof, were submitted in writing to the coastal State and to the Secretary-General on 26 April 2012.
