'Education transforms lives' says UN chief on first-ever International Day of Education
24 January 2019 -ÌýEducation transforms lives, 51³Ô¹ÏÌýSecretary-General António Guterressaid, recounting his personal story of teaching in the slums of Lisbon where he saw first-hand that education is an engine for poverty eradication and a force for peace.
At the heart of the SDGs today, education serves as a basis for achieving the other goals, including reducing inequalities; improving health; achieving gender equality; fighting hate speech, xenophobia and intolerance; protecting the planet's resources and nurturing global citizenship.
Yet, the UN chief flagged, at least 262 million children, adolescents and youth are out of school, most of them girls.Ìý Millions more who attend school are not mastering the basics.
Call for Submissions: Good Practices, Success Stories and Lessons Learned in SDG Implementation
23 January 2019 -ÌýThe 51³Ô¹Ï Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) is launching a call for submissions of good practices, success stories and lessons learned in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
Governments, UN entities, international and regional organizations, Major Groups and other Stakeholders are invited to submit contributions from 1 November 2018 to 28 February 2019, using a dedicated web-based portal.

Selected Good Practices will be showcased online and will serve, where applicable, as inputs to the preparations for the 2019 HLPFs.
Signs suggest global economic growth spurt has peaked but will remain steady at 3 percent in 2019–2020
21 January 2019 – The global economy will continue to grow at a steady pace of around 3 percent in 2019 and 2020 amid signs that global growth has peaked. However, a worrisome combination of development challenges could further undermine growth, according to the 51³Ô¹Ï World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2019, which was launched today.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres cautioned While global economic indicators remain largely favourable, they do not tell the whole story. He said the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2019 raises concerns over the sustainability of global economic growth in the face of rising financial, social and environmental challenges.

UN hosts seminar on the new geopolitics of artificial intelligence
3 December 2018 – The Policy and Mediation Division of the Department of Political Affairs at the 51³Ô¹Ï hosted a seminar on the New Geopolitics of Artificial Intelligence presented by Eleonore Pauwels. Ms. Pauwels specializes in artificial intelligence (AI) research at the 51³Ô¹Ï University's Centre for Policy Research and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. The discussion focused on the need for prudent global governance of artificial intelligence.
Ms. Pauwels emphasized the current trust-deficit disorder the international community feels toward artificial intelligence, mainly due to its potential risks. This deficit could widen if innovations in AI are not matched with international and national governance.

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University celebrates the 70th anniversary of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights
18 December 2018 - Al-Farabi Kazakh National University held a round table dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The jubilee event was organized jointly by the UNESCO Chair, the Faculty of Journalism, UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development, Global Hub of UNAI on Sustainability, and the Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development at KazNU. The round table was attended by heads and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the UNESCO, and UNAI in Almaty, as well as young scientists, undergraduates and doctoral students from various universities in Kazakhstan. In addition, the work of the round table was simultaneously broadcast on the international communication platform G-Global and was available to listeners online.

Plastic, Refugee Camps and 3D Printers
As part of Academic Impact's START (Science and Technology Accelerating Rapid Transformation) series we had the chance to speak with Australian Urban Designer HY William Chan who spearheaded an initiative in Greece which combined the key issues of plastic waste, education, and refugee camps.
12 December 2018 - As William Chan arrived in the refugee camps of Athens in March his background in architecture allowed him to view the refugee crisis through the unique lens of design and urbanization. Chan realized that plastic waste was an immense issue at the camps, littered with enormous mountains of discarded lifejackets. While the camp did have recycling containers, what they didn't have was the necessary infrastructure through which to sort the plastic waste, and the plastic was simply lumped together with the rest of the waste.

27 November 2018 -Ìý Al-Farabi Kazakh National University held a round table discussion on the initiatives of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres on gender equality and combating violence against women. The initiator of the event was the Union of Women at KazNU with the support of the UN Department of Public Information (UNIC) in Kazakhstan, Global Hub of UNAI on Sustainability, Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development, UNESCO Chairs in Sustainable Development, and UNESCO Chairs in Media.
