Area of Solutions: Biodiversity and nature-based solutions, Capacity-building, Women and gender-responsive actions
In 2013, in Comasagua, El Salvador, Secours Populaire supported the creation of an agricultural cooperative, Canasta Campesina. The farmers grow fruit and vegetables in an environmentally friendly manner: they do not use fertilizers or agro-toxic pesticides, they use water in a reasonable manner and they take care to preserve the soil. Once food security has been ensured, they sell the surplus of their production directly to local consumers in the form of farmers' baskets. This project directly reached 450 persons, especially women and youth and helped restore the confidence of the population. The project in Comasagua is bearing fruit: since the project was set up, participating families have been able to multiply their income by a factor of five, with an average monthly income of $75 to $360. This increased income has been used to pay for education and healthcare. The living conditions of the farmers participating in the project have improved considerably and the project has ensured food security for participants.
