Background
Ten years after the 26th Special Session of the General Assembly on HIV/AIDS in New York in 2001, more than 3,000 people gathered at UN Headquarters for a high-level meeting on AIDS in June 2011, in order to take stock of progress made since the 2001 Special Session and to shape the UN¡¯s future AIDS response.
The 2011 High-Level Meeting took place five years after the where UN Member States committed to moving towards universal access to AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support.
More than 30 Heads of State, Government and Vice Presidents attended the High-Level Meeting. On the final day of the meeting, UN Member States adopted a guiding country responses to HIV/AIDS over the next five years.
