By the letter dated 15 August 2020 () addressed to the Secretary-General, the Permanent Representatives of?Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Qatar and Tunisia requested the inclusion of this item in the provisional agenda of the seventy-fifth session.

Consideration at the seventy-fifth session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 15th and 19th meetings, on 10 and 19 November 2020 (see and ).

Statements were made by the representatives of QatarMalaysia and Tunisia.

Delegations expressed support for granting observer status to the Global Dryland Alliance.

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At the 15th meeting, on 10 November, the representative of Qatar, also on behalf of Afghanistan, Angola, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, the Central African Republic, C?te d’Ivoire, Cuba, Eswatini, Fiji, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Jordan, Kiribati, Kuwait, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Mongolia, Morocco, Senegal, the Sudan, Tajikistan, Timor-Leste, Tunisia and the United Republic of Tanzania, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Observer status for the Global Dryland Alliance in the General Assembly” () and announced that Azerbaijan, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Oman, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and Turkey had joined in sponsoring the draft resolution.
At the 19th meeting, on 19 November, the representative of Qatar announced that Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, the Gambia, Iraq, Lebanon, the Marshall Islands, Palau, the Republic of Moldova, Sierra Leone, Togo and Uganda had joined in sponsoring the draft resolution. Subsequently, South Sudan also joined as a sponsor of the draft resolution.

At the same meeting, the Committee adopted draft resolution A/C.6/75/L.8 without a vote.

Under the draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite the Global Dryland Alliance to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer; and request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
