In a vibrant gathering of memory and learning, the marked the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust on January 30, 2024. More than 400 students from Kenyan higher education institutions joined diplomats, religious leaders, and UN officials to commemorate the solemn day.
The event was illuminated by various messages, including one from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, delivered by Zainab Hawa Bangura, the Director-General of UNON. Adding their voices were the Ambassadors of Israel, Austria, and Germany to Kenya, each sharing poignant reflections on the Holocaust.
In a poignant fusion of history and education, students immersed themselves in short educational films about the Holocaust, which claimed over 6 million Jewish lives from 1933 to 1945.
The day was not only a tribute but also an interactive learning experience, allowing students to engage the three ambassadors in a panel discussion so they could deepen their understanding of this dark yet pivotal chapter in history.
