Special Event on STI Roadmaps: The role of digital technologies in agriculture production/ consumption
Excellencies,
Distinguished colleagues,
I am pleased to welcome you to this Special Event on Science, Technology and Innovation Roadmaps, held at the margins of the first FAO Science and Innovation Forum.
Thank you to the co-organizers from FAO, the Office of the Secretary-General¡¯s Envoy on Technology, the European Commission Joint Research Centre, and UNESCO.
This event provides a timely opportunity to examine how digital technologies can more effectively contribute to achieving the 2030 Agenda and SDGs.
From climate mitigation and adaptation to sustainable agri-food systems, digital technologies can be leveraged as an important tool to advance progress.
Today, we will hear real-life examples of digital technologies applied to improving production capacity of sustainable agriculture, for realizing the efficient operation of agricultural management system, and for helping alleviate the food crisis.
Today¡¯s event is also an occasion to discuss Science, Technology, and Innovation Roadmaps, as powerful policymaking and multi-stakeholder engagement tools for applying digital solutions to the SDGs.
STI Roadmaps can help plan, communicate and facilitate actions, track progress, and foster a learning environment to align and adapt digital technology to development objectives.
We will also highlight the importance of synergies, international partnerships and multi-stakeholder initiatives for improving the design and implementation of STI roadmaps.
Dear colleagues,
We have to ensure equitable access to digital technologies. And in their adoption and application, we must protect the privacy of individuals, encourage ethical use and minimize risks to security and human rights.
DESA has supported the 51³Ô¹Ï Technology Facilitation Mechanism and worked with partners around the world to bolster innovation, disseminate technology solutions, and strengthen the interface between science and policy.
Together we have made important gains in peer learning and knowledge sharing, including through the Partnership in Action on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs Roadmaps.
Today¡¯s Special Event will keep this momentum going.
Let me assure you that UN DESA stands ready to work with you and help harness the potential of STI roadmaps for digital transformation to realize the SDGs.
I thank you.
