Hashem Osseiran is a Lebanese journalist with a decade of experience covering conflicts and humanitarian crises in the Arab world. As a Beirut-based correspondent for Agence France-Presse, he reported on the Syria conflict, battles against the Islamic State group, Lebanon's financial crisis, and the 2020 Beirut port explosion. He was one of the first foreign correspondents to enter government-held Syria after the devastating 2023 earthquake and has frequently reported from Baghdad since the start of anti-government protests in 2019.
Currently, he is a Gulf correspondent for AFP based in Dubai. He has reported from Oman, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates on climate change and the energy transition leading up to the 2023 COP28 talks. His work has recently focused on the conflict in Yemen, particularly following an anti-shipping campaign by the Houthis in the Red Sea. With the onset of the conflict in Gaza in October, he has also reported from South Lebanon and Egypt's Rafah border crossing with Gaza, where he joined a delegation of UN Security Council envoys on an informal visit.
Hashem holds an MSc in Middle East politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
