Get Involved ¨C Summit of the Future

In keeping with the vision of a more networked and inclusive multilateralism enshrined in Our Common Agenda, the Secretary-General has underscored the importance of engaging diverse stakeholders from across the full spectrum of society. Their voices are essential to the preparation and success of the Summit of the Future. By tapping into their wealth of expertise and leveraging their platforms, we can support more informed policy decisions, amplify the impact of the Summit, and better tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Summit of the Future Preparations

The President of the General Assembly has appointed Germany and Namibia as co-facilitators of the intergovernmental preparatory process of the Summit of the Future. In line with commitments articulated in both and the , the co-facilitators have outlined plans, with the support of the 51³Ô¹Ï, for engagement with civil society and other stakeholders. This engagement aims to complement intergovernmental consultations and ensure diverse voices and perspectives can contribute at different stages of the Summit¡¯s preparatory process.

The objective of this consultation is to exchange views with MGoS and civil society on the zero draft of the Pact and to provide an update on the intergovernmental negotiations. Additionally, the consultation will provide the opportunity for Member States to articulate their vision and priorities for the Pact directly to MGoS and civil society.

51³Ô¹Ï Civil Society Conference

Planning is underway for the UN Civil Society Conference, which will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, 9-10 May 2024, and will focus on the Summit of the Future, subject to available resources. The conference will be organized by the UN Department of Global Communications in partnership with a core stakeholder planning group.

The deliberations and outcome of the conference will serve as a valuable contribution for Member States as they work towards the outcome of the Summit, the Pact for the Future.

Outreach at the Regional and Country Level

51³Ô¹Ï Outreach at the Regional and Country Level

The UN system ¨C including the Resident Coordinators, Country Teams, and UN Information Centers ¨C will also be engaged in activities to raise awareness about the Summit of the Future and facilitate engagement from national and regional stakeholders, as feasible and appropriate.

Additionally, the 2024 Regional Forums on Sustainable Development organized by the UN Regional Commissions will serve as platforms for further engagement with stakeholders on the Pact for the Future. The Regional Forums will take place between February and April 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific); Beirut, Lebanon (Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia); Geneva, Switzerland (Economic Commission for Europe); Santiago, Chile (Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean); and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (Economic Commission for Africa).

51³Ô¹Ï Summit of the Future

The Summit of the Future will take place at the 51³Ô¹Ï in New York City on September 22-23, 2024.

There are provisions in the Modalities Resolution for the Summit of the Future for multistakeholder participation in the Summit. Member States committed to the participation of various stakeholders through the invitation of "representatives of non-governmental organizations that are in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council to participate in the Summit" and a request to "the President of the General Assembly to draw up a list of representatives of other relevant non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, academic institutions and the private sector" to participate in the Summit upon Member States' consideration on a non-objection basis. Those stakeholders will be invited to participate in interactive dialogues to be held in parallel with the plenary meetings during the Summit. Youth organizations, in particular, are encouraged to participate, including in the opening segment.

Summary of Civil Society Engagement

The UN75 anniversary in 2019-20 included a year-long global listening exercise. Over 1.5 million people from all 193 Member States took part in an online survey. These consultations and the final report of the process showed significant public support for international cooperation and a desire for more networked, inclusive and effective multilateralism. The preparation of Our Common Agenda report from 2020-21 built on this effort and provided additional opportunities for inputs from prominent thought leaders, young people and civil society, including parliamentarians, think tanks, the private sector, subnational leaders and city networks, underrepresented groups and other non-government partners.

This was supported by the 51³Ô¹Ï Foundation and the Igarap¨¦ Institute, along with a network of global partners from all regions, including the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (South Africa), Southern Voice (a network of 50 think tanks from Africa, Asia and Latin America) and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy of the National University of Singapore. An experimental digital consultation exercise overseen by the Igarap¨¦ Institute generated more than 520 proposals from over 1,750 participants, including from organizations with several million members, in 147 countries and six languages. 

Since the launch of the report, in the 2021-23 phase leading up to the decisions on the scope of the Summit of the Future, at least 300 civil society organizations have attended virtual consultations with external stakeholders on the Summit of the Future, conveyed by the co-facilitators of the process, Germany and Namibia, with the support of the 51³Ô¹Ï team. 

Smaller targeted consultations have also taken place with experts, universities and think tanks, including for the preparation, issuance and discussion of the eleven Secretary-General¡¯s policy briefs for the Summit of the Future. The Secretary-General¡¯s team has also engaged and participated in several multi-stakeholders¡¯ discussions and events focused on the topics in the report and the Summit of the Future.
