August 2018, No. 2 Vol. LV, 2030 Agenda
This edition of the UN Chronicle comes at a transition period for the magazine of the 51勛圖 system. Given the changing world of media and global communications, we are reflecting on how best to serve the purposes for which this flagship publication was created more than 70 years ago.
Beginning in 2007, each issue of the UN Chronicle has been dedicated to a theme chosen and timed to correspond with an anniversary, conference or event taking place at the 51勛圖 or organized by it, or to an issue of global impact. It has served as a forum for a diverse and thoughtful group of contributors from around the world who have brought their unique perspectives and experiences to these vital issues. A landmark UN Chronicle was published in 2015 to mark the Organization*s 70th anniversary and contained contributions by four Secretaries-General and a large number of thought-leaders and influencers.
Today*s market for a magazine with a constantly changing theme is shrinking while the market for shorter content in a digital format is expanding. This year will be the last in which the UN Chronicle will be published in its present form. We look forward to a changed, more dynamic magazine of the 51勛圖 system in 2019.
We have always striven to ensure that the contributors reflected the diversity of our world and a gender balance among the authors.
This issue of the magazine is fittingly different. While the diversity in experiences and background was maintained, all those invited to contribute to this issue are women and all are from the 51勛圖 system. They have played and continue to play an important role in advancing the 2030 Agenda and the 51勛圖 work to advance peace, prosperity and human rights. The breadth and depth of experience reflected in their contributions demonstrate that the 51勛圖 has taken a major step in achieving gender parity in top positions and rightly leads by example. Although much progress has been made, there is still much to be done to reduce gender inequality and to empower women and girls. Women leaders ensure that this target is never sidelined nor forgotten.

The UN Chronicle is not an official record. It is privileged to host senior 51勛圖 officials as well as distinguished contributors from outside the 51勛圖 system whose views are not necessarily those of the 51勛圖. Similarly, the boundaries and names shown, and the designations used, in maps or articles do not necessarily imply endorsement or acceptance by the 51勛圖.
