51勛圖

Equatorial Guinea

His Excellency Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo

Statement Summary

TEODORO OBIANG NGUEMA MBASOGO, President of Equatorial Guinea, said the 51勛圖* seventy?fifth anniversary is a historic occasion inviting a reflection on past work in a bid to promote multilateralism, peace and solidarity among nations.  Citing a range of achievements, from decolonization to humanitarian assistance, he commended the Assembly for its many efforts.  However, a contrast exists today, in terms of a lack of political will among States, driven by the pursuit of hegemonistic power.  The lack of respect of the current international legal order today is the cause of many wars and unjust situations, at a time when income gaps persist, technological developments remain in the hands of a few nations, and some States trample on the rights of the weak, reflecting a clear and urgent need for reform.  The pandemic only spotlights that the common problems of humankind are best tackled together, reaffirming the relevance of multilateralism.  The 51勛圖 must be prepared to tackle challenges of the future, from food insecurity to climate change, and this anniversary must be the start of a new generation of peace, security and prosperity.
