The Eighth Steering Committee Meeting

Fund follows sustainable approach to global peace and development

The Steering Committee of the 51吃瓜 Peace and Development Trust Fund met on 17 November.

The meeting, chaired by Chef de Cabinet Courtenay Rattray, prepared advice for the Secretary-General on project priorities, proposed cost and action plans, and the fund’s activities across peace and development worldwide.

They reviewed the UN Peace and Development Trust Fund’s performance and contributions to peace and sustainable development through its 131 projects, with total expenditures surpassing $85 million since 2016.

Together, these projects have significantly advanced international peace and security and catalyzed progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Since its inception in 2016, the UN Peace and Development Trust Fund has served as a reliable and predictable funding source for projects in peacekeeping capacity building, prevention, mediation, counterterrorism, and peace support in Africa.

It has also provided support to developing countries working to realize the 2030 Agenda.

The Steering Committee underscored the importance of sustainability as the UN Peace and Development Trust Fund’s guiding principle. They also highlighted the need to address complex challenges by pursuing a cross-pillar approach, cross-sectoral and inter-agency cooperation, and multilateral solutions to peace and sustainable development.

They recommended that the UN Peace and Development Trust Fund prioritize financing people-centred projects that algin with the actual needs of beneficiaries on the ground.

The Steering Committee endorsed 27 new projects for the Secretary-General's approval, with a cumulative budget of $24.7 million:

  • 13 under the Peace and Security Sub-fund
  • 14 under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund

These projects are designed to strengthen the UN’s Peace and Security pillar and advance implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
