Description
The project will assist beneficiary¡¯s countries to develop their National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) that will help build the dedicated, well-structured and comprehensive geospatial data foundation that is required to generate relevant information products and services that can be used to support evidence-based policy analysis, planning, management and monitoring, and evaluation purposes at the regional, national and local scales.
The project will be instrumental in aligning in some selected African countries (based on geographic representation, this includes Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Kenya, Niger) the management of geospatial information for decision making towards the establishment of spatial infrastructures - for the collection, maintenance and dissemination of the geospatial information products and services, including relevant policies, standards and legal frameworks, resulting in the concept of spatial data infrastructures (SDI).

Synopsis
The project aimed to strengthen the capacities of selected African countries to produce, utilize, manage geospatial information for effective monitoring and review of the implementation of SDGs, and to assist beneficiary countries to develop their National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) that is required to generate relevant information products and services for evidence-based decision-making in policy, planning, management, monitoring and evaluation purposes at the regional, national and local scales.
Overall, the project improved institutional and technical capacity of the selected beneficiary countries.
The project¡¯s main deliverables include:
- Organization of five regional workshops from 2019 to 2021 on the implementation of national spatial data infrastructure in Africa, which discussed the policy guideline document and reviewed best practices and status of the implementation of NSDI in African countries.
- Organization of four Regional Capacity Building Workshops from 2019 to 2021 to raise awareness and improve countries capacity in the production of geospatial information giving particular emphasis on the empowerment of young female geospatial professionals.
- Organization of National Stakeholders Engagement Workshops in Burkina Faso and Ethiopia as pilot countries in Africa for an inclusive and participatory approach in the drafting, reviewing and validation of the action plan on Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (IGIF).
- Development of policy guidelines for the implementation of national spatial data infrastructures following discussions in the five regional workshops.
- Publication of technical documents including Geospatial Data Taxonomy for the Sustainable Development Goals in Africa, Manual on standard guiding principles on a global statistical and geospatial framework.
- Development of an with customized interface for sharing and accessing geospatial information resources and products.
