Description
In 2020, progress in many health areas continues, but the rate of improvement will not be sufficient to meet most of the targets of the SDG 3. Today, nearly half of the world*s population have limited access to basic public health facilities. The pandemic has also deepened inequalities, especially across the vulnerable and marginalized groups such as racial and ethnic minorities, the sick, elderly, women, children, and the poor. particularly in developing countries, including the countries engaged in the Belt and Road Initiative.

According to a report released by the World Bank, UN, and leading think tanks, 72% of the 169 SDG targets will be achieved through infrastructure, a core component of the Belt and Road development plan. However, the biggest challenges facing the private sector is its knowledge and capacity on sustainability, in order to protect both the health and wellbeing of our human beings and the planet effectively.

The project aims to implement the 2030 Agenda through the established by the UN Global Compact to engage companies participating in BRI infrastructure projects to implement the , in the area of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. In doing so, the project will help strengthening the sustainability and alignment of the BRI infrastructure projects to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs with innovative solutions.

Synopsis

The UNGC-led initiative aimed to align Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) infrastructure projects with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through strengthening engagement between policymakers and private stakeholders, enhancing the capacity of private sector actors, and developing sustainable infrastructure solutions. These efforts were designed to ensure that BRI projects not only meet immediate needs but also contribute to long-term sustainable development.

The project*s major deliverables included:

  • Major publications including Global Compact Ten Principles Applied in Infrastructure Sectors under the BRI: A Practical Guide for Private Sector Players (Human Rights and Labor Principles, Environment Principles, and Anti-corruption Principles) and Maximizing Impact towards the SDGs: Guidance and Assessment Tool for Companies to Advance Sustainable Infrastructure under the BRI, serving as guidance and assessment tool for companies to advance sustainable infrastructure under the BRI.
  • Establishment of a functional open-source database hub integrating cases from companies participating in BRI projects to share best practices.
  • Successful implementation of an eco-toilet prototype in Yunnan Province, China, addressing rural sanitation challenges and winning recognition at the 2022 BRICS meeting.
  • Five capacity-building workshops across China, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Turkey, engaging over 130 participants from 12 countries.
  • Active social media engagement, including 33 tweets, 6 YouTube videos, and 3 Weibo posts, generating significant interaction and reaching a broad audience.
