Description
Endowed with lakes, rivers, wetlands and seas, East African countries are positioned to highly benefit from their Blue Economy resources. Tourism and transport are two related sub-sectors that have the scope of generating more inclusive socio-economic and environmental development. However, blue economy subsectors such as fisheries, tourism and inland waterways transport face many capacity-related challenges including (i) lack of information about the blue economy¡¯s contribution to the national economy (ii) lack of sub-regional collaboration to optimize the skills available in blue economy areas, (iii) lack of sound tourism development instruments and paucity of empirical data to inform appropriate policy formulation and (iv) unharmonized policies and practices on inland waterways transportation across the Eastern Africa subregion.
This project aims to enhance the capacity of East African countries to optimize on the Blue Economy opportunities available through key sub-sectors (e.g., tourism and transport) to drive higher intercontinental trade, foster social integration and generate inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development. The project will strengthen pilot countries' capacity to formulate appropriate tourism development systems, including tourism statistics and satellite accounts, and to develop multimodal transport, and trade corridors supported by adequate infrastructure.
