Description
In urban areas of Lao People*s Democratic Republic, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and South Africa, there's a lack of systemic governance response to multi-layered risks from urbanization, biodiversity loss, and climate change impacts. Vulnerability hotspots in these regions, where marginalized groups reside, face overlapping vulnerabilities due to inadequate planning, informal settlements, and limited access to basic services. Compounded by factors like population growth and rural-urban migration, these areas are increasingly vulnerable to climate hazards and environmental degradation. Insufficient data and knowledge on vulnerabilities hinder effective planning and access to climate finance, exacerbating risks for both communities and critical infrastructure.
This project aims to enhance national and local government capacities in least developed countries and small island developing states for sustainable urban development. Through cooperation between four countries, it will facilitate knowledge exchange and strengthen technical capabilities. By mobilizing finance for climate adaptation and resilience efforts in high-risk urban areas, it will prioritize the development of bankable climate action proposals. The project will also advocate for urban vulnerabilities at international forums and leverage existing initiatives like Innovate4Cities and SURGe to scale up its impact globally.
