IDF 2016 Country Report: Ethiopia
April 11, 2016
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of Ethiopia celebrated the 2016 International Day of Forests on 21 March 2016 at an event held at the Harmony Hotel, Addis Ababa.
Key stakeholders working in the forest sector in Ethiopia and staff of the Ministry participated in the celebration. A paper entitled “The National Context of the Forest Sector in Ethiopia” was presented.
Participants made an interactive discussion on the existing challenges and opportunities of the forest sector. As the theme “Forest and Water” has been adopted by the ministry, special emphasis was paid to the regulatory services of forests in ensuring high quality and quantity of water supply.
As Ethiopia is a mountainous country, discussions focused on the roles of upstream forest ecosystems to the lowlands at the periphery of Ethiopia as well as neighbouring countries.
