Matthias Kr?nke

Portrait of Matthias Kr?nke

I completed my PhD in Political Science at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa in April 2023. Since 2018 I have served as a researcher at Afrobarometer, a leading pan-African research institution. In 2022, I was a Non-Resident Fellow at the Governance and Local Development (GLD) Institute at the University of Gothenburg, and since September 2023 I have worked as a Guest Teacher at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Using quantitative and qualitative approaches, my research focuses on how political institutions enhance democratic accountability and facilitate human development. Specifically, I am interested in the internal organisation of political parties, legislatures as well as state bureaucracies, and how their representatives affect processes of democratisation and development. Geographically, my research focuses on countries in sub-Saharan Africa. My research has been published or is forthcoming in Comparative Political Studies, Democratization, Party Politics, Public Opinion Quarterly, and Nature Climate Change, among others.
