Director Emily Njeri Mburu-Ndoria of the AfCFTA Secretariat on the potential of digital trade for Africa
Emily Njeri Mburu-Ndoria, Director of Trade in Services, Investment, Intellectual Property Rights and Digital Trade at the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat discusses the importance of developing a protocol on digital trade in Africa. The focus is on promoting and facilitating digitally enabled transactions, considering commitments made by member states regarding trade in goods and services. The increasing shift from physically transmitted to digitally transmitted products presents challenges, including high taxes and inadequate digital infrastructure. To boost cross-border trade, harmonized rules and regulations are needed, along with efficient cross-border digital payment systems. Implementing a digital trade protocol would enable Africa to enhance and expand its digital trade capabilities.
