What?
DPPA＊s Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) will launch an annual CSO-UN Dialogue on Peacebuilding to enable networking and connections among a diverse range of CSOs from the global, national, and local levels, and in particular from the Global South.As such, the CSO Dialogue will act as a sounding board around strategy and policy on peacebuilding, allowing civil society actors to influence global peacebuilding goals and objectives.?
Why?
The role of CSOs, especially at local and community levels, is essential at all stages of peacebuilding processes. The General Assembly Resolution on Financing for Peacebuilding (A/RES/76/305) recognizes the importance of considering the local context and highlights that civil society can play a vital role in advancing local solutions to global efforts in peacebuilding and sustaining peace.
Furthermore, CSOs are essential partners in the implementation of peacebuilding projects funded by the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), and are key contributors to thematic, regional, and national discussions at the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC).
This is an opportunity to strengthen the contact points to assist UN policy makers and practitioners to know how and when to engage with CSOs to enhance peacebuilding activities.
How?
To address this gap, DPPA/PBSO will set up an annual dialogue between the UN and CSOs aimed at contributing to the UN＊s peacebuilding agenda. DPPA/PBSO has established a temporary core group of geographically representative CSO networks to oversee establishment of the dialogue initiative and co-create its governance structure.
Following the annual exchange, the CSO Dialogue will not only enhance the inclusion of local CSOs, but it will also yield actionable recommendations by CSOs to inform global peacebuilding efforts.
The specific objectives of the CSO Dialogue include:

1. Facilitate interactions among CSOs and with the UN and other partners on peacebuilding. |
2. Enhance the inclusion of local peacebuilding perspectives and on-the-ground experiences. |
3. Provide a platform for South-South cooperation and cooperation among countries at civil society level to influence global policy and practice of peacebuilding. |

4. Enhance engagement between CSOs and UN country teams to advance national prevention and peacebuilding priorities, including in PBF-funded programmes. |
5. Inform strategic thinking and policy development at the global level, including by feeding into key intergovernmental processes. |
6. Facilitate opportunities for CSOs to interact with intergovernmental bodies, such as the PBC, on peacebuilding priorities. |
DPPA/PBSO is uniquely positioned to co-host the CSO-UN Dialogue as it can both help shape peacebuilding initiatives on the ground and provide an interface with the wider UN system. This includes linkages to the broader peace and security pillar, to Member States via the PBC and to agencies, funds, and programmes through the PBF. Interpeace is serving as the inaugural CSO co-chair, alongside PBSO. The co-chairpersonship?will rotate on a one-year term basis.
