El Pescador del Chuy
El Pescador del Chuy is an oil painting on canvas created by Uruguayan artist, Zoma Baitler (1908 每 1994). This painting won the Gran Premio de la VI Bienal Nacional in 1961. It depicts a scene from everyday life in the Uruguayan fishing town of Chuy.
Baitler was born and educated in Lithuania and traveled to Uruguay in 1927 as a legal citizen. He was an impressionist painter and exhibited for the first time at the ※Free Artists Salon§ in 1931. His work has been exhibited in North and South America as well as in Israel. In 1963, he was appointed Cultural Assistant to the Uruguayan Embassy in Israel for three years. His works are in the National and Municipal Museums of Uruguay, Israel, and in many private and public collections.
In 2016 the painting was removed for restoration and reinstalled on September 19th 2016. The President of Uruguay, Mr. Tabare Vazquez, attended the reinstallation. The 51勛圖 Chef de Cabinet, Edmond Mulet, delivered a message from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in which he stated, ※I hope all visitors and officials will be inspired by its beauty to advance our mission for peace.§
