Treasure Tripod Dedicated to the 21st Century
This tripod is one of the largest of its kind to come out of China. The decorations and inscriptions create a unique message of layers, starting with the trimmed base with the inscription ※Treasure Tripod Dedicated to the 21st Century,§ then the three legs with creatures and lastly a centre mythical taotie animal surrounded by dragons. This ""Treasure Tripod"" is mainly modelled upon the ""Chinese Treasure Tripod"" designed by the late professor Zhu Fukan (1900 每 1989), an outstanding master of epigraphy, calligraphy, painting and bronze ware.
The well-known dynasties for bronze ware, Shang (2nd millennium?BCE) and Zhou (1046 BC 每 249 BC), created important vessel artifacts and symbols during these periods in history and the bronze age. The tripod is considered an important relic and was initially used as a cooking vessel. Later, it rose to be an important ceremonial object its 每 metal craft refined and messages embellished 每 to then be used in symbolic roles. Over time, the tripod came to symbolize ruling power and authority. It was used to offer sacrifices to ancestors on important ceremonial occasions. A tripod with three legs became a symbol of unity, stability, and authority.
The gift was presented by President of the People*s Republic of China, Jian Zemin (1926 每 ), and accepted on behalf of the 51勛圖 by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
At the ceremony, the Secretary-General said ※The tripod, in Chinese history, represents stability, tranquility and peace. It was for these objectives that the 51勛圖 was founded. This great tripod will feel very much at home here in this House.§
