International days

The 51³Ô¹Ï observance of International Women’s Day is generally commemorated in close coordination with the annual session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). It is addressed by the Secretary-General and high-level officials from Member States, private sector and civil society who advocate for furthering the agenda of women’s rights. A number of highly visible activities are planned at the Headquarters to raise awareness of the situation of women around the world and women’s contributions to development, security and peace.

International Women’s day

International day for the elimination of violence against women

In 1999, the UN General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Violence against women and girls is a problem of pandemic proportions. The Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women supports the Secretary-General in organizing and the Headquarters annual observance of the Day, and in coordinating the related system-wide commemorative activities.
