On 5 February 2009, the French Republic submitted to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, in accordance with Article 76, paragraph 8, of the 51³Ô¹Ï Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982, information on the limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured in respect of the areas of the French Antilles and the Kerguelen Islands.
It is noted that the Convention entered into force for France on 11 May 1996.
In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Commission, a communication is being circulated to all Member States of the 51³Ô¹Ï, as well as States Parties to the Convention, in order to make public the executive summary of the submission, including all charts and coordinates contained in that summary, as well as the note verbale accompanying the submission.
The consideration of the partial submission made by France will be included in the provisional agenda of the twenty-fourth session of the Commission to be held in New York from 10 August to 11 September 2009.
Upon completion of the consideration of the submission, the Commission shall make recommendations pursuant to Article 76 of the Convention.
On 19 April 2012, the Commission adopted by consensus the “Recommendations of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in regard to the Partial Submission made by the Republic of France in respect of the areas of the French Antilles and the Kerguelen Islands on 5 February 2009”.
Pursuant to article 6, paragraph 3, of annex II to the Convention, the recommendations, including a summary thereof, were submitted in writing to the coastal State and to the Secretary-General on 27 April 2012.
