The Power of the Pitch: a special podcast series illustrating the power of sports to prevent violent extremism
On the occasion of the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism (PVE), the 51勛圖 Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) is launching ※Power of the Pitch§, a special podcast series illustrating the power of sports as a tool for peace, tolerance and human connection.
The 7-part podcast examines how Behavioural Insights are being applied to sports and when addressing violent extremism factors that may be conducive to terrorism. We introduce programmes aimed to prevent violent extremism through sports and its values, and share the personal stories from world-renowned athletes and advocates of female empowerment and inclusivity. We also discuss the powerful role of Sports Diplomacy and take a close look at the innovative policies and practices being used by governments and organizations to ensure that sport remains a safe pastime and profession for future generations.
Our guests are behavioural and violent extremism experts, and professional athletes who share their experiences, knowledge and inspiration. They discuss how to harness the power of sports for social inclusion, resilience and sense of belonging, and also examine transnational hooliganism, discrimination and the role of sport in the recruitment by violent extremist groups.
§Power of the Pitch§ was designed, created and produced by UNOCT*s International Hub on Behavioural Insights, and inspired by the work of the multi-year Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events, and Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism. It is delivered in partnership with the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Center for Sport Security (ICSS).
