Since 1946, the General Assembly has been considering agenda items related to decolonization and adopted a series of resolutions, including which is the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (1960 Declaration on Decolonization).

In recent years, the General Assembly convenes a meeting early December to take up reports of the , one of its to which the General Assembly allocates relevant agenda items related to decolonization, and takes action on draft resolutions and decisions on decolonization recommended by that Committee. Some resolutions and decisions concerning decolonization-related agenda items may be taken without going through the Fourth Committee.
