In the lead up to COP27, to be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, 51勛圖 Secretary-General Ant車nio Guterres, with President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi of Egypt, hosted an informal Leaders* Roundtable on Climate Action, bringing together a small but diverse and representative group of Heads of State and Government during the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly.
The roundtable facilitated a frank and informal exchange between world leaders as climate impacts worsen around the world and carbon emissions continue to climb to a record all-time high, hitting vulnerable communities the hardest. Amidst this worsening crisis, the roundtable took stock of actions taken by governments to date to fulfill and strengthen commitments made at and before COP26 in Glasgow. It also highlighted the significant gaps on climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience, climate finance, as well as loss and damage.
The event aimed to build a common understanding on how world leaders can strengthen international cooperation and re-energize the multilateral system to deliver demonstrable progress through a successful outcome at COP27 that will help to bridge these gaps.
