Increasing women¡¯s full, equal and meaningful participation is a key priority for the Department of Peace Operations (DPO), however, the representation of uniformed women in UN Peace Operations is still very low.

In the military component, in April 2021, only 17.6 per cent of those deployed as individual military officers were women and women only made up 5.3 per cent of the military in troops.

Uniformed Gender Parity Strategy

To guide our efforts towards achieving gender parity, DPO adopted the , 2018-2028.

The Uniformed Gender Parity Strategy stipulates yearly targets for the share of women deployed per personnel category. For 2021, the target for the military component is 8 per cent women in troops and 18 per cent women in individual military positions.

While this strategy goes beyond numbers, gender parity figures and targets are an important benchmark and indicator for evaluating joint efforts towards gender parity. DPO has been publishing data on uniformed gender parity on its for years.

We thank all troop-contributing countries for supporting UN Peace Operations by deploying uniformed personnel. DPO relies on this collaboration to increase the share of uniformed women deployed to UN peacekeeping missions and expects them to meet the targets set out in the Uniformed Gender Parity Strategy in their pledges to UN peace operations.

To support troop-contributing countries in their efforts to increase the share of military women deployed to UN Peace Operations, DPO has been working on two innovative reports for troop-contributing countries so they can better assess their contribution towards gender parity.

Gender Parity Target Achievers

One of these reports will list and highlight, on a monthly basis, troop-contributing countries that achieve the yearly gender parity targets stipulated in the Uniformed Gender Parity Strategy as Gender Parity Target Achievers, according to the share of women deployed per personnel category and deployment size.

This report will be published on the UN Peacekeeping website and social media. The other report will be shared individually with troop-contributing countries to assess their progress over time.

While these reports will concentrate on the military for now, similar efforts are underway for reporting on police and justice and corrections personnel, who are also part of the Uniformed Gender Parity Strategy.

These reports are expected to underline troop-contributing countries' contributions towards the shared commitment of gender parity and to encourage Member States to engage in a dialogue and learn from the best practices of target achievers.

We will continue to support and guide all troop-contributing countries in their efforts to achieve the targets.
