Closing Remarks at ECOSOC Special Meeting: Promoting Care and Support Systems

Excellencies,
Distinguished delegates,
Ladies and gentlemen,

Today's discussions have highlighted the critical importance of care systems for sustainable development, human rights, and gender equality.  We also had the opportunity to share the UN Policy Paper on Transforming Care Systems in the Context of the Sustainable Development Goals and Our Common Agenda, examining lessons learned and good practices in these areas.

Societies worldwide are experiencing significant demographic shifts, with people living longer, and the share and the number of older persons growing rapidly.

We are called to rethink and strengthen our approach to care and support services, ensuring no one is left behind.

Throughout our discussions, we emphasized the necessity of developing comprehensive, inclusive approaches that address diverse needs throughout the life course.  These systems play a vital role in supporting development from early childhood to older age, creating environments that nurture growth, well-being, and quality of life for all.

We acknowledged the importance of adequate care and support systems that ensure the rights of both caregivers and care recipients, giving them a voice in decision-making around care policy.

Care options vary significantly across countries and personal circumstances.  They are influenced by service availability, accessibility, culture, and financial situations.  Given this complexity, policymakers must support reconciling work and family demands through effective, coherent, and equitable social and economic policies.

Addressing the gendered nature of care work is crucial.  Today we made clear the need to redistribute care responsibility more equitably and ensure decent work conditions for all care workers, in both formal and informal settings.

Intergenerational solidarity is also key to building a strong care and support system.  By engaging individuals of diverse ages, we can foster mutual understanding and support across generations, creating more resilient and inclusive communities.

As we conclude our deliberations today, it is clear that the approaches we explored can inform the implementation of comprehensive and tailored care strategies.  It is imperative that Member States continue to prioritize the development of high-quality care and support systems, which are essential for enabling people to live with dignity, choice, personal safety and the ability to participate in their communities and society.

Thank you.
