Opening Remarks On the occasion of the World Sustainable Transport Day Event co-organized by DESA and ECE as mandated by General Assembly resolution A/RES/77/286

Distinguished guests,
Ladies and gentlemen,

World Sustainable Transport Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the crucial role that transportation plays in the global economy as well as its significant impact on our environment.  There is an urgent need to adopt sustainable transport systems that meet the high expectations of both the economy and environment.

Global carbon emissions from transportation almost doubled to 8 billion tonnes over the past thirty years.  We can reverse this trajectory.  Electric vehicles, alternative fuels, smart city transit systems, and many new technologies provide a way to revolutionize mobility with both access and sustainability.

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs is committed to facilitate these technology solutions and innovations to catalyse sustainable change, including through the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism.  Investing technology and R&D at scale is key.  Trillions of dollars will be required worldwide for sustainable transport infrastructure over the next decade.

Today, we pledge to embrace the opportunities that new technologies present in our shared pursuit for a sustainable future.  Our efforts are a commitment to future generations, a promise of a more sustainable and equitable world where transport systems drive rapid economic development, inclusivity, resilience, and public health, and no one is left behind.

DESA will be at the forefront of this endeavour, working with partners, leveraging expertise and promoting best practices to make the vision of a sustainable future a reality for all of the people sharing our Earth.

Thank you.
