12 September 2023 - A number of events under the umbrella of the SDG7 Action Forum 2023 are taking place during 16-25 September around New York City to help drive momentum on key Energy Compacts, including those promoting no new coal, 24/7 carbon-free energy, electrification of health clinics in energy-poor countries, clean cooking technologies, sustainable water and energy solutions and other important initiatives.
As momentum grows towards the SDG Summit, action on energy is focused on scaling up the Energy Compact commitments, which have been selected as one of the twelve to be featured during the SDG Action Weekend in connection with the Summit. With the aim to raise the level of Energy Compact commitments by governments, the private sector and civil society from the $600 billion pledged at their inception in 2021 into the trillion-dollar range, announcements are anticipated for SDG Acceleration Day on 17 September, just before the formal SDG Summit opens. The annual progress report showing the impact that the Compacts have made will be presented at that time.
The Energy Compacts are jointly overseen by , the inter-agency mechanism for which UN DESA serves as secretariat, comprised of 30 UN and international organizations that work on clean, affordable energy for all (SDG7). At the same time, UN-Energy members are working to expand and accelerate their contributions to achieving SDG7 by the target date of 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050, considered crucial to limiting planetary warming to 1.5 degrees C.
