GEIDCO Thematic Event at COP25

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I wish to congratulate GEIDCO for convening this timely event here at COP25 in Madrid.

Four years have passed since both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change were adopted by world leaders.

Yet, we are presently not on track to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, or to keep the global temperature rise within 1.5∼C above pre-industrial levels.

But we can get there if we work smarter.

The recent Global Sustainable Development Report, prepared by an Independent Group of Scientists and supported by my Department, has identified the global energy transformation as key to achieving both the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Indeed, advances in SDG 7 每 including access to clean electricity and clean cooking fuels 每 have the potential to spur progress across the other SDGs, such as:
  • poverty eradication,
  • gender equality,
  • climate change mitigation and adaptation,
  • food security,
  • health and education,
  • sustainable cities and communities,
  • clean water and sanitation,
  • jobs and innovation,
  • sustainable transport, and
  • the treatment of refugees and other displaced people.
Yet, progress on SDG 7 on energy is falling short. There is still much to do to ensure universal access.

Despite increases in electrification over the last two years, about 840 million people still lack access to electricity.

Meanwhile, around three billion still lack reliable fuels while continuing to rely on wood, charcoal, animal and crop wastes, or other solid fuels to cook their food and heat their homes.

And the rate of progress towards cleaner fuels and technologies has slowed down.

Dear Colleagues,

Significant improvements have been made in energy efficiency, however global progress is still not on target. Renewables are becoming well-established in the electricity sector, but lag behind in the end use of heating and transport.

The Global Energy Interconnection provides an excellent platform to speed up energy transformation. It can also driving innovation, clean energy access and climate action.

Through increased global energy interconnections, renewable energy resources in many developing countries could be connected and converted into economic advantages that would benefit all. This would then help to narrow regional gaps, making a significant contribution to the peaceful and harmonious development of the world.

In this context, once again, I wish to congratulate GEIDCO for its dedication and hard efforts in facilitating global energy interconnection.

This event is a great occasion to establish partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge, expertise, technology and financial resources.

UNDESA is committed to promoting the global partnership in energy interconnectivity.

I wish you a fruitful discussion.

And I wish this event a great success.

Thank you.
