Opening Remarks at Synergies between climate action, biodiversity, disaster reduction and SDGs

Distinguished Participants,Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am very pleased to join you at this special event on synergies between climate action, biodiversity, disaster reduction and the SDGs.

The steps we take to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change must be realized together. Indeed, their adoption in 2015 established the foundation for the coherent implementation of climate action and sustainable development objectives, across all levels and sectors.

However, despite considerable efforts over the past four years, we are not on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. We must dramatically step up the pace of implementation as we enter a decisive Decade of Action to deliver the Goals for people and the planet. We must connect the dots across all that we do 每 as individuals, civic groups, business, and governments 每 and truly embrace the principles of inclusion and sustainability.

That is why the UN Department of Economic and Social affairs, UNDESA, together with UNFCCC secretariat, brought together representatives from governments and all stakeholders. Together, we organized the first global conference on strengthening synergies between the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement in April 2019 at UN City in Copenhagen, hosted by the government of Denmark.

Our message is clear: A strong connection between the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda provides the world with a best opportunity for positive, systemic change, that could ensure a sustainable and inclusive development in a healthy environment for present and future generations.

We have compiled more detailed recommendations for advancing joined-up implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement in the conference summary. You may find this summary in the back of this pavilion.

Distinguished participants,

Today*s discussion will focus on key immediate action areas to promote coordinated implementation of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. Coordination is imperative across all levels and sectors. This includes the need to identify all possible synergies.

Indeed, we commend Japan*s commitment to the coordinated implementation of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, across all levels and sectors.

Today*s event will be very useful in sharing experiences from many actors. We look forward to Japan*s own experience on how best to leverage policies, programmes and partnerships to simultaneously advance the:

? SDGs,? the Paris Agreement,? the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and? the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

I wish this event a great success.

Thank you.
