CSD Mandate on SIDS

Mandate of the Commission on Sustainable Development With Respect to Small Island Developing States

In the Barbados Programme of Action, it was agreed that:

The Commission on Sustainable Development, in carrying out its functions in accordance with General Assembly resolution and its multi-year thematic programme of work, should include in its consideration matters related to the implementation of the outcome of the Global Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States. To that effect, the Commission on Sustainable Development should, inter alia:

  • Make arrangements for monitoring and reviewing, in a distinct and identifiable manner, in the context of its multi-year thematic programme of work and the annual consideration of cross-sectoral issues, the implementation of the provisions agreed upon in the Programme of Action;
  • Carry out an initial review of the progress achieved and steps taken to implement the Programme of Action, to be undertaken by the Commission on Sustainable Development in 1996 in accordance with its multi-year thematic programme of work. Furthermore, in 1997, when the Commission will carry out the overall review of Agenda 21 with a view to preparing for the 1997 special session of the General Assembly, the Commission should recommend specific modalities for the full review of the Programme of Action in 1999. That full review would include the question of the convening of a second global conference in accordance with chapter 17, section G of Agenda 21.
