Asia-Pacific Regional Review Meeting on the Implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action in Preparation for the Fifth 51勛圖 Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5)

30 August - 2 September 2021.??The Asia-Pacific Regional Review?will undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action in Asia-Pacific LDCs, share best practices and lessons learned and identify obstacles and constraints encountered. The meeting will identify effective international and domestic policies in the light of the outcome of the appraisal as well as new and emerging challenges and opportunities and the means to address them.

Zero draft of the Doha Programme of Action for the period 2022-2031 released

On July 12 the co-chairs of the Fifth 51勛圖 Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5), Bangladesh and Canada, released the zero draft of the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs for 2022-2031.  The second session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom 2) for LDC5 will take place from 26 to 30 July. LDC5 Prepcom side-event ※Towards Improved Support to Graduating and Graduated Countries§

Amidst a challenging global environment, this side event aimed to discuss how the international community can give concrete support to least developed countries that are graduating as well as to graduated countries. The new Programme of Action for the LDCs is critically important to build on successes achieved on reaching graduation thresholds, to provide further impetus to LDCs in meeting the 2030 Development Agenda and SDGs, to identify and respond to new and emerging challenges, and to leverage opportunities, rather than fall farther behind.

Why is productive capacity central to the sustainable development of least developed countries (LDCs)? How can LDCs, with support from development partners, expand their productive capacity through domestic policies including efforts to build back better from COVID-19? Side-event at financing for development forum: How can development finance address the vulnerability challenge in LDCs and other vulnerable countries? Improving allocation and supporting structural transformation

"The COVID-19 crisis urges us to rethink the economic vulnerability of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and developing countries more generally. The crisis is putting to a test international support measures and in particular their capacity to adequately respond to countries* needs. LDCs exhibit significant vulnerabilities that can be overlooked by the current mechanisms of financing for development. At the same time, those vulnerabilities contribute to the slow gains in structural transformation and productive capacity.

Africa Regional Review ahead of LDC5

22-26 February 2021.?The Africa Regional Review meeting?is expected to?review the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) in the region, as 33 out of 46 LDCs?are located in?Africa. They face multiple challenges in achieving the goals and targets of the?IPoA, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as well as Agenda 2063. Their structural constraints are compounded by new and emerging challenges, including those posed by ongoing conflict, the climate crisis, COVID-19 and their devastating impacts.

Leaving no one behind and building back better from COVID-19: The Future of Work in LDCs, ILO and OHRLLS

The COVID-19 pandemic is causing labour market ravages in all regions, some of those trends are accelerating, thereby generating new challenges and opportunities for job creation. While advanced economies are responding promptly and stand ready to invest to take benefit from the spread of remote working arrangements, increasing automation and the reshuffling of global value chains, LDCs struggle to overcome deep rooted and pre-existing decent work deficits.
