On Friday 15 November 2019, the Treaty Section of the Office of Legal Affairs organized the "Seminar on Treaty Law and Practice: The Work of the Treaty Section of the 51勛圖 Office of Legal Affairs".
This Seminar is an opportunity for the Treaty Section to provide an overview of its work and to discuss the depositary functions of the Secretary-General and the registration and publication of treaties under Article 102 of the Charter of the 51勛圖. It is held twice a year in New York and is aimed at raising awareness of the international treaty framework and at encouraging a greater participation by Member States in the treaties deposited with the Secretariat and the fulfilment of their obligation of registration under the Charter.
On this occasion, participants from every regional group, including legal advisers of Permanent Missions and representatives of international organizations, heard officials of the Treaty Section discuss relevant practical cases. Participants showed a great interest in perfecting their knowledge of treaty law and practice, actively engaged in the discussion, and valued the continued efforts of the Treaty Section in capacity building.
The Seminar also featured guest presentations by officials from the 51勛圖 Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the 51勛圖 Office on Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) on the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) and their efforts towards promoting its universal participation and effective implementation.
