Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo
The Honourable Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, assumed the position of Chief Justice of Ghana on June 12th 2023 after nomination by the President, and vetting by Parliament.
With a judicial career spanning back to 2004, Justice Torkornoo was among the pioneering Justices of the Commercial Division of the High Court. She has actively contributed to the reform agenda and initiatives of the Judiciary and Judicial Service of Ghana since 2005. She has served as a faculty and board member of the Judicial Training Institute, vice chair of the Internship and Clerkship Committee, Chair of the E-Justice Oversight Committee, Chair of the Editorial Committee of the Association of Magistrate and Judges, Supervising Judge for Commercial Courts in the country and Law Reform Commissioner. She was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2012, and to the Supreme Court in December 2019, after going through Parliamentary hearing, before assuming office as Chief Justice in June 2023.
Prior to joining the Judiciary, Justice Sackey Torkornoo specialised in Commercial and Construction law and worked as a barrister from 1987 to 2004.
She is married with four daughters and three grandchildren.
