Summary

The factors impacting food safety in LDCs are deep-rooted and multi-dimensional. Despite the commitment of the international community to foster food security, good nutrition, and sustainable agriculture reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union Agenda 2063 and the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs, the number of people living in extreme poverty remains very high. Feeding the LDCs population nutritiously and sustainably will require an agri-food systems transition that provides livelihoods for farmers and nutritious products for consumers.

The UN Secretary-General has placed particular emphasis on the role of food systems transformation to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs in the Decade for Action (2020-2030). Among the various global initiatives and efforts, the UN Food Systems Summit of 2021 mapped out the broad outlines of how the world needs to move forward to reshape the structures under which our food is produced, distributed, and consumed. Then, the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs has called for a set of measures to address food insecurity challenges faced by LDCs, including by establishing a special food reserve system dedicated to LDCs.

Against this background, the 51³Ô¹Ï Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) and the 51³Ô¹Ï Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (UN-OSAA), in close collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the 51³Ô¹Ï (FAO), are organizing a side event at the margin of the 5th 51³Ô¹Ï Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) to share best practices in addressing food insecurity by building resilient agri-food systems, by exploring the potential of food stockholding systems and complementary measures, and by exploring policies and measures the LDCs and their partners can take to address food emergencies.
