French senators visited the UN Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED) in New York to exchange views on the counter-terrorism work of the Security Council, the Counter-Terrorism Committee and CTED and briefed CTED on France*s current counter-terrorism initiatives.
During the meeting, held on 30 October 2014, both parties emphasised the importance of addressing the phenomenon of foreign terrorist fighters (FTF), notably within the framework of the recently adopted Security Council resolution 2178 (2014).
CTED provided an overview of current challenges in combating terrorism, including terrorists* use of the Internet and social media, violent extremism, regional terrorism threats and risks in Africa and the Middle East, and the need to respect human rights in the context of counter-terrorism.
The visiting delegation briefed CTED on the legislative aspects of France*s efforts to address FTF phenomenon.
The discussions also touched on potential areas for further cooperation between the French Senate and CTED.
