On 5- 7 December 2022, the 51勛圖 Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), acting in collaboration with its Global Research Network (GRN) partner Naif Arab University for Security Sciences (NAUSS), held a high-level seminar on ※Cross-Regional Trends on the Nexus between Organized Crime and Terrorism§.
Robust discussions touched on the current trends and challenges on the nexus between terrorism and organized crime guided by the Security Council resolutions and other relevant instruments. The seminar featured wide participation from the Permanent Missions to the 51勛圖 and presentations by experts, including from international and regional organizations.
Svetlana Martynova, Senior Legal Officer and Coordinator Counter Financing of Terrorism (CFT) Issues at CTED, highlighted the CFT aspects of responding to the nexus issue, including in the context of inter-agency and international cooperation in financial investigations.
Cecilia Naddeo, Legal Officer and Coordinator of Legal/Criminal Justice Issues at CTED, made a presentation on how international legal instruments responded to the trends of the nexus between terrorism and domestic/transnational organized crime.
David Scharia, Chief of the Executive Directorate*s Technical Expertise and Research Branch, highlighted how ※CTED is committed to further enhancing our partnership with academia and other entities 每 including the Naif Arab University for Security Services 每 in supporting the development of evidence-based research that shed light on terrorism trends, including the crime-terror nexus.§
