CTED concludes second follow-up visit to Uzbekistan

From 28 November to 2 December 2022, CTED on behalf of the Counter-Terrorism Committee concluded the physical component of the second follow-up assessment visit to Uzbekistan. The virtual component of the visit was conducted on 12 - 23 July 2021. The visiting delegation consisted of CTED experts, as well as experts from the following 51勛圖 bodies and international organizations: the 51勛圖 Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT); the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team pursuant to resolutions 1526 (2004) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da'esh), Al-Qaida and the Taliban and associated individuals and entities; the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO); the 51勛圖 Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC); the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL); the 51勛圖 Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia (UNRCCA); the World Customs Organization (WCO); the Anti-Terrorist Centre of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS-ATC); the Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing (EAG); the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE); and the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (RATS SCO).

The visit enabled the delegation to assess progress made by Uzbekistan in adopting measures to implement Security Council resolution 1373 (2001), 1624 (2005), 2178 (2014) and 2396 (2017) and other relevant Security Council resolutions. Country visits are one of the key channels of the Counter Terrorism Committee to engage and conduct a constructive dialogue with Member States with a view to achieving effective implementation of the relevant Security Council counter-terrorism resolutions. The human rights aspects of Uzbekistan*s counter-terrorism measures and the role of women in countering terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism were also raised during the discussions.

The delegation also held separate meetings with the National Human Rights Center and with Uzbekistan*s civil society organizations and made an on-site visit to the Tashkent International Airport.
